Are hemp and marijuana the same thing?

No. They are “cousins”, from the same family – cannabis.

More than 100 chemical cannabinoids are found in cannabis, but the amount of these cannabinoids differs dramatically between hemp and marijuana.

Marijuana's most common cannabinoid is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the chemical cannabinoid associated with the plant's psychoactive effect. In marijuana, THC levels can reach 30%, depending on the strain, but THC levels in hemp are less than 0.3%.

The low levels of THC in hemp mean that, unlike marijuana, it has historically been used for industrial purposes. Hemp's rapid growth and strong fibers made it ideal for crafting durable rope, clothing, sail, and paper.

Although hemp won't get you high, it does contain significant amounts of another cannabinoid, cannabidiol (CBD), which is also found in marijuana. CBD is a nonpsychoactive cannabinoid, and its interaction with receptors in the central nervous system and immune system can offer medicinal benefits, making hemp-CBD concentrates popular ingredients.

Does CBD get you “high”?

No. The hemp plant naturally has less than .3% THC, which is well below psycho-active levels.

How is CBD oil made?

At hōlus, we are proud to make CBD oil (including distillate and isolate) all within our GMP-compliant, ISO 9001 certified facility in Wisconsin. First, we receive thousands of pounds of hemp biomass from our US partner farmers. We grind down this biomass into a fine powder and then carefully heat the powder to activate the natural cannabinoids and remove unnecessary moisture. Next, the hemp material is packed for extraction. We proudly use extraktLAB supercritical CO2 extraction equipment, which allows us the highest quality crude oil. After the crude oil has been collected, it’s worked through the various processes to refine the crude into either distillate (full spectrum) or isolate (THC-Free). These products are then utilized in the various products we sell--from tinctures, to lotions, to lip balms--these are the “foundations” of our amazing products.

What process is best for hemp extraction?

We are strong believers that supercritical CO2 extraction is the best extraction process for products you’ll consume. Not only can we better monitor the purity and cannabinoid levels of the oil produced, it’s “Clean & Green” – all natural. Unlike other methods (such an ethanol extraction), you won’t need to worry about any toxic leftovers in your oil. Ever consume ethanol? We don’t recommend it. It’s important to always educate yourself on how your oil is made.

Why does science matter in CBD products?

Simply put, you’re using CBD for your body’s well being. It’s important that the purity, consistency and quality is closely monitored and formulated. Our in-house staff of PhD chemists carefully test and manage each step of the manufacturing process to be certain our best is the best for you!
